On this month’s edition of DiverseCITY, we take a walk through Central Harlem. We learn how the Senegalese, who helped rebuild the neighborhood after it became blighted, are being driven out by a wave of gentrification. We hear about the gay men and women whose influence on the Harlem Renaissance remains unsung. Neighborhood stalwart Vy Higginsen talks about her Mama Foundation and the impact it’s continued to have on the area. We get a taste of Strivers Row when we visit a chocolatier who is stirring up confections and conversations at a new boutique chocolate shop. Then Dean Schomburg tells us about how his legendary grandfather, Arturo, became one of the fathers of African American History.
