Deb Roy, Ph.D. is a tenured member of the MIT faculty and directs cognitive science research at the MIT Media Lab. He co-founded and served as founding CEO of Bluefin Labs, a social TV analytics company. Roy now serves as Chief Scientist of Bluefin Labs after its acquisition by Twitter in 2013. An author of over 100 academic papers in machine learning, cognitive modeling, and human-machine interaction, Roy is a frequent speaker at industry and academic events. His highly popular TED talk in 2011 presents his research on how his son learned his first words using the world's biggest home video collection, and how that research led to the creation of Bluefin Labs. A native of Canada, Roy received his bachelor of computer engineering from the University of Waterloo and his PhD in cognitive science from MIT.
