Bio

Kathy Goldman, a leading advocate on food and hunger issues, created the first Summer Meals Program for children in New York City in 1971, and the following year created the school breakfast and lunch program in Community School District 1 on the lower east side. It fed 12,000 children daily, and was later copied citywide.

She helped establish the Food for Survival Foodbank.

Founder and executive director of Community Food Resource Center, Inc. from 1980 to 2003, which began as a one-person operation and expanded to a multi-million dollar nonprofit organization that provided information, resources, and services to hundreds of thousands of low- income New Yorkers. CFRC focused on federal food programs food stamps, child nutrition by helping eligible people gain access and fighting to eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles. CFRC also provided food directly in low-income communities through one of the city’s largest soup kitchens in Harlem, and through two senior dinner programs utilizing public school facilities after school hours. Kathy started the city’s first EITC project which facilitated income tax refunds to working poor families.

Kathy has a Masters degree in Urban Planning.

Kathy Goldman was honored at the White House as being a "Champion of Change" regarding issues surrounding food security.
