Maria Laurino

Bio

Maria Laurino began her career in journalism at the Village Voice, went on to become the Chief Speechwriter for New York City Mayor David N. Dinkins, and eventually to write for The New York Times. Her first memoir, “Were You Always an Italian?,” which explored the issue of ethnic identity among Italian-Americans, was a national bestseller and her memoir, “Old World Daughter, New World Mother,” examined the pull and tug the author experienced between Old World traditions that valued familial dependence and a New World feminism that prized female autonomy. Her most recent work, “The Italian Americans,” will accompany the forthcoming four-hour PBS documentary of the same title.
