Marvin Hamlisch was already in the midst of a successful music career when he graduated from Queens College in 1967. Beginning with his first hit "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" in 1965, Marvin went on to become a famous and beloved composer for film and Broadway. Among the many awards he won during his career were Oscars and Grammys for The Sting and The Way We Were, a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize for A Chorus Line, and Emmy Awards for Barbra: The Concert, making him one of the rare individuals in history to earn both an "EGOT" and a Pulitzer. But in interviews and in his own memoir, Marvin confessed to a feeling of longing for something more than success and accolades. Would he be able to find it?

CUNY Laureates is a documentary series about the lives and achievements of CUNY graduates who went on to win major awards in their respective fields. By reintroducing these exceptional minds to younger audiences, we hope to emphasize the value of a high-quality public education and demonstrate how it can transcend all social and political boundaries, even to this day.
