Dr. Deirdre Cooper Owens is an Author & Asst. History Professor at Queens College/CUNY. She joins us to discuss her book “Medical Bondage: Race, Gender, and the Origins of American Gynecology".

Dr. Owen discusses the father of gynecology, James Marion Sims and how he trained his slaves to assist him in his work while experimenting on them and that this practice was unfortunately common between doctors and slaves.

Dr. Owens also makes a comparison through her studies of the tolerance in child birth between white and black women.
