Original tape date: January 13, 2009.To talk about psychotherapy, its history, its successes and failures, its fads and fashions, its finances and its future is Jonathan Engel, Professor and Associate Dean at the School of Public Affairs at Baruch College and a colleague of mine. He's recently published a book, “American Therapy: The Rise of Psychotherapy” in the United States, which has been widely praised and has stimulated debate. He has authored three other books on the historical evolution of U.S. health and social welfare policy: “Doctors and Reformers: Discussion and Debate on Health Policy, 1925-1950;” “Poor People's Medicine: Medicaid and U.S. Charity Care Since 1965;” and “The Epidemic: A History of AIDS.” He is currently writing a history of the U.S. health system since 1970.
