First aired: September 7, 2026.On the season premiere of City Works, host Laura Flanders speaks with two of the most prominent labor leaders in the country: Randi Weingarten, the president of the 1.8 million member American Federation of Teachers (AFT), and Lee Saunders, the recently retired president of the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME), which boasts 1.3 million members and is the largest union of public sector employees in the United States. The three discuss the new heights of anti-union activity coming from the second Trump administration, and how labor is responding at the highest levels of organizing, legislation, and electoral politics. The conversation was part of an online forum held by the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies in April 2026.
