This edition: Crime and Punishment in New York: Reforming our Justice System in the 21st Century City
TweetEpisode Details
Original tape date: March 30, 2016. First aired: April 4, 2016.Moderator Bob Liff, two former corrections commissioners, one social justice advocate, and one expert journalist discuss the problems plaguing New York City's jails. Should Riker's Island be closed, as many elected officials and observers argue? How do we reform New York's bail system, which leaves hundreds to languish in City jails without being tried or convicted? What can be done about gang violence throughout New York's jails and prisons? Are we rehabilitating individuals before they rejoin our communities, or are we merely punishing them for past offenses and then setting them up for failure and recidivism?
