This edition: Affordable Housing for a Renewed Workforce: Where and When?

Episode Details

Original tape date: April 26, 2023. First aired: May 2, 2023.

In this episode we discuss the issues associated with the development of housing for a new and developing workforce.

With Gov. Hochul's ambitious proposal for a Housing Compact with Long Island communities now stymied during budget talks, we must turn back to conversation of affordable housing with traditional tools--hopefully reimagined. New York State helped create over 1.2 million jobs in the last decade but has only managed to create 400,000 dwelling units. In a city and state where a significant number of residents have either left, or are thinking about leaving over rising costs, among other factors, how do we create housing that is affordable to all? Additionally, we ask, where can it be done? Do the answers include infill, redefining "affordable", incentives to overcome NIMBYism, legalizing cellars and basements, or increasing floor area ratios? It just might be all of these.
