On November 27th 2018, the Chisholm Project on Brooklyn Women's Activism from 1945 to the Present hosted it's annual Chisholm Day celebration at CUNY Brooklyn College. In recognition of the 50-year anniversary of Chisholm's historic election as the first Black woman elected to Congress, the Project expanded its customary programming into a day-long symposium. This talk served as the keynote event of Chisholm Day. Legendary poet, scholar and activist Dr. Sonia Sanchez engaged in dialogue with Dr. Zinga Fraser to illuminate Shirley Chisholm's life and legacy against the historic backdrop of the Black Freedom Movement and in light of the current political moment. She also drew upon her own poetry and experiences as an activist to frame the discussion. Prior to the talk, our audience was also addressed by other honored guests including public servant and CUNY Trustee Una S.T. Clarke, who reflects on personal memories of Shirley Chisholm.
