This edition: Puerto Rico in Crisis - One Year Later
TweetEpisode Details
Original tape date: August 5, 2018. First aired: September 20, 2018.On the morning of September 20th, 2017, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, devastating the island and many of its 3.4 million residents.
Now a year after the storm, Puerto Rico still needs a lot of support and CUNY has been a big part of the recovery effort. Puerto Rico in Crisis - One Year Later is a ½ hour special that reveals the many educational, environmental, and constructive ways in which CUNY has been helping Puerto Rico bounce back.
Puerto Rico in Crisis - One Year Later is hosted by EMMY® award winning journalist, Tinabeth Piña. This special presentation was mostly shot in Puerto Rico with support from the Center for Puerto Rican Studies.
Carol Anne Riddell reports on the The NY Stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative where Governor Cuomo along with the CUNY Service Corps deployed students to Puerto Rico this past summer to work with non-profit organizations helping to repair damaged homes in Puerto Rico.
Hostos Community College was a huge factor in the re-housing of Hurricane survivors who sought refuge in New York City thru FEMA’S Transitional Sheltering Assistance program. Andrew Falzon sat down with two survivors who relocated to NYC.
University students from Puerto Rico were given tuition breaks if they chose to finish their studies at CUNY. Ernabel Demillo interviewed displaced students studying at Queens College & CCNY.
Zyphus Lebron profiles John Jay Professor Jodie Roure who single-handedly helped assemble her own medical relief effort in Puerto Rico. She was recognized by Congress for her efforts.
Tinabeth Piña met Macaulay Honors College students in Puerto Rico who partnered with the San Juan Bay Estuary Program to not only learn more about the island’s biodiversity but to also engage the students in environmental service.
