Episode Details

Original tape date: January 1, 1998.

This series creates an understanding of the essential nature of music and its broad international cultural applications by exploring the commonalties and the diverse uses of the basic musical elements-melody, rhythm, texture, harmony-that bind all music together.
A composer creating a fixed structure that can be repeated and a musician improving with the context of performance are basically doing the same thing. They are both creating and shaping musical materials and grammar, and at the same time adding their own individual mark. This program explores the less understood relationships between the two.
