First aired: August 4, 2023.Academy Award-winning writer/director Sofia Coppola’s feature, the atmospheric thriller The Beguiled, was among the most acclaimed films at 2017’s Cannes Film Festival, where it earned her the Best Director prize. A new cinematic adaptation of Thomas Cullinan’s 1966 Southern Gothic novel (previously made into a 1971 film by Don Siegel), The Beguiled is set during the Civil War. The movie tells the story of a Union soldier found behind Confederate lines in Virginia and taken in by the sheltered women at an all-female boarding school. Sofia Coppola joined Eugene Hernandez, Deputy Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, for a special 75-minute onstage conversation, featuring excerpts from The Beguiled.
