Original tape date: August 24, 2017. First aired: February 12, 2020.I Am A Dreamer
Thru the lives of young Latinos living in NYC, I Am A Dreamer shares the triumphs … the dreams…and the fears that make their stories unique in today’s world.
Segment 1. Maury Ayora (25), a journalism student at La Guardia Community College, decides to take action the day Attorney General Jeff Sessions cancels DACA. Many of his friends are DREAMERS, so he decides to launch a blog about the young Latino experience in contemporary NYC. Maury is a US citizen born in New York, but his grandmother immigrated for Ecuador when she was very young.
In his first blog entry he writes, “In a country that professes to be ‘the land of the free’, one that more than any other in the history of society, is made up of such a diverse background of races and cultures, traditions - it sadly seems that these days we are regressing further and further into divisions of class, race and political ideals.”
As we watch, the blog becomes a device to tell Dreamer stories and adventures.
Segment 2. Zulu (31) & Nivia (24), are both visual artists who create art from the mysteries of immigration. ZULU is developing a visual project that documents the different species of birds in Prospect Park that migrate in the winter to South America. By showing the birds’ journey, he is able to talk about his own experience as a migrant from Colombia.
Segment 3, Maury, a journalism student at LaGuardia Community College, prepares to interview his friend and Dreamer Ash Gonzalez (27), whom he will join the next day when Ash renews his DACA.
