He explains in no uncertain terms the importance of drinking and the culture of the barroom, the allure of criminals over politicians, his preference for the challenges of fiction writing, and the demise of journalism as we know it. His latest subject, Branch Rickey, is discussed as a way of understanding the changing racial climate in America.
