Original tape date: January 29, 2008.Anthony Tamburri announces the appointment of Dr. Fred Gardaphe to the position of Distinguished Professor of Italian American Studies at Queens College of the City University of New York and The Calandra Italian American Institute. Anthony Tamburri, Ph.D., Dean and Executive Director of The Italian American Institute interviews Dr. Gardaphe about his prolific body of groundbreaking and award winning works of Fiction and Non-Fiction, his long committment to Education, and his plans for the future of Italian American Studies at the City University of New York and at large. Professor Gardaphe extends his scholarship from the academy out to the community and ITALICS attends a reading by Dr. Gardaphe from his current book, From Wiseguys to Wise Men, Masculinities and the Italian American Gangster, held upon its release at the Calandra Institute, and a lecture on the documentary Film, "Execellent Cadavers" by Marco Turco, on the heroic legacy of the anti-mafia crusaders and Prosecutors Falcone and Borsellino in Sicily, at the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington, NY.
ITALICS also attends The National Organization of Italian American Women's Annual Epiphany celebration honoring three wise women from the community.Among those Honored this year were: Laureen DeBuono, Annemarie Germano Dicola,Esq., and Linda Descano,CFA. A special presentation was made to Playwright/and Founding NOIAW member Donna deMatteo.
