Original tape date: January 11, 2011.First on ITALICS, "Dire Napoli" (or Telling Naples) is the title of His Eminence Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe's recent visit to New York. The initiative's subtitle "Don't Close the Door on Hope" indicates that its aim is to present Naples to the world without hiding the city's pain and contradictions while highlighting its beauty and hope for redemption.A series of events will take place over five days when His Eminence will visit the institutions and organizations that have invited him to New York.Accompanying Cardinal Sepe on his trip will be Undersecretary of State Hon. Vincenzo Scotti, representing the Italian government. H.E. Cardinal Sepe was a guest of the Calandra Institute and also attended a discussion on Global Migrations from an Italian and American perspective, which was held at the CUNY Graduate Center.
Next ITALICS takes you to NOIAW, or The National Organization of Italian American Women’s annual Epiphany Celebration in Honor of Three Wise Women selected from the Italian American Community for their achievements and contributions. NOIAW’S Honorees for 2011 are: Gina Biancardi, Founder & President, Casa Belvedere, The Italian Cultural Foundation; Marianne J. Legato, MD., F.A.C.P., Founder and Director, Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine and Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University; and Marisa May, Celebrated Restaurateur, Co-Owner, SD26 Restaurant & Wine Bar & SD26 Events.
Next on ITALICS, we’ll take you to an opening for a new book entitled “Italian Folk, Vernacular Culture in Italian American Lives”, Edited by Dr. Joseph Sciorra, Folklorist at The Calandra Institute/CUNY.
