First on this edition of ITALICS, we'll take you to the National Organization of Italian American Women's Spring Gala at the Pierre Hotel in New York City. The gala, which took place on April 29th, honored renowned restaurateur, celebrity chef, author and television personality, Donatella Arpaia. The evening also saw the inaugural Friend of NOIAW Award presented to the Honorable Natalia Quintavalle, Consul General of Italy in New York. ITALICS correspondent Lucia Grillo takes us to the festivities and talks with some of the gala's distinguished guests.
Next on ITALICS, in a sequel to original coverage begun in our March episode, we'll join ITALICS Correspondent Lucia Grillo and the Calandra Institute's Dr. Joseph Sciorra in Elko, Nevada for the 29th Annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, which this year featured Italian butteri and local Italian American ranchers. We will introduce you to award-winning Italian American free-form poet, Paul Zarzyski - who also spent time as a bronc rider - and learn about the influence of his Italian roots on his work and expression. We will also speak with some of the most prominent, generations-old Nevada ranching families, who happen to be Italian immigrant ranchers, or descendants thereof. These cowboys will recount their ancestors' - or their own! - immigration, their experiences growing up in cow country, the ranching community, what it's like to be Italian American on the range, and the future of cow herding.
Then, in ITALICS NEWS BRIEFS, in commemoration of 2013 as the Year of Italian Culture in the United States, we will highlight In Scena! - a presentation of Italian theatre that spans the five boroughs, with an announcement from Kairos Italy Theatre.
Finally, stay tuned as, in a belated Mothers' Day tribute, ITALICS treats you to more poetry written and recited by Paul Zarzyski!
