Original tape date: April 22, 2014. First aired: April 30, 2014.This month, ITALICS: Television for the Italian American Experience travels from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, through the United Nations in Manhattan, to Montclair, New Jersey: advocating for community elder and child care at Swinging Sixties Senior Center and Small World Day Care; going behind the scenes with Italian newspaper “La Voce di New York” housed at the U.N.; and a conversation and some unique jazz performed by Enrico Granafei at Trumpets Jazz Club.
Continuing our series on Italian-Americans in Journalism – begun in our “Revisiting Sandy” episode last October when correspondent Lucia Grillo talked with journalist Anthony Rifilato – this month, ITALICS host Anthony Julian Tamburri talks with Stefano Vaccara, founder and Editor in Chief of “La Voce di New York,” an Italian- and English-language newspaper based in the United Nations.
Swinging Sixties Senior Center and Small World Day Care Center in Williamsburg, Brooklyn are two community institutions that provide care for the elderly and the very young. With gentrification expanding throughout the boroughs and increased cuts to public funding, places such as this are threatened with closing, and this particular center, with its unique history, takes to its grassroots origins to fight for its survival. Correspondent Lucia Grillo takes us to Brooklyn, New York, to talk with Swinging Sixties administrators – and some of its spirited “regulars.”
Musician and songwriter Enrico Granafei welcomes ITALICS host Anthony Julian Tamburri to Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair, New Jersey, for a conversation about his journey from Calabria, Italy to The U.S., playing the Hands-Free-Chromatic Harmonica and the DB Guitar simultaneously, and more. Plus, a private performance exclusively for ITALICS viewers.
