In a single decade, radio went from being a hobbyist’s gadget to the most immediate and visceral cultural force in mass communication history up to that time. People felt a moment-to-moment connection with the world “out there,” and with all the other listeners in their homes, sharing the same experience simultaneously. This new cultural experience created a reason to form a major mass communication industry. Corporate involvement with radio came swiftly and decisively, providing a constant stream of live news and entertainment. Government regulation of the newly conceived industry quickly followed. This lesson follows radio history from its invention to the birth, expansion, and regulation of the major networks, and through the ongoing adjustments in programming and audience culture that have attended the advent of FM radio and television.
