Episode Details

Ethical dilemmas crop up daily for media professionals. The characteristics of such dilemmas depend on a number of variables: the medium involved, the codes articulated by respective media organizations, the practitioner’s conscience, outside economic and ideological pressures, and the “spirit” of the media message—whether it is intended as entertainment, information, persuasion, or parody. This lesson examines the individual factors that differentiate one media ethics situation from another. It also provides an overview of the guiding principles that inform ethical decision-making in the media. This will help you apply your understanding of ethics to new situations as they arise.
