Original tape date: August 15, 2016. First aired: August 18, 2016.We start this episode in Queens, where we meet with the singer and folklorist Irka Mateo, who speaks to us about how her research into her Afro-Latin and Taíno roots led her to develop her musical style which we can see in her most recent production: Vamo a gozá.
Later we meet with Vicentico, singer, composer and cofounder of the famous Argentinean group: Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. Vicentico talks to us about his career as a solo artist and about his most recent album, Último.
We continue our tour in the Cervantes Institute where Patricio Lerzundi interviews Lydia Cacho, the great journalist and human rights activist who, despite the constant death threats in her native Mexico, continues with her daily work reporting on abuse against women and advocates for the creation and implementation of laws for abusers to pay for their crimes.
We arrive in the West Village, to witness the largest demonstration of solidarity with the LGBTQ community. Some members of the Latino Pride Center tell us why the massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando has united and further reaffirmed their fight for a better understanding and tolerance towards their community.
Later we travel to Nuevo Laredo in Mexico to document the work of the Salesianos, a religious group who, through their educational and social projects, support Central American and Mexican migrants who are facing challenges in their frustrating attempts to cross the border.
To finish up, we return to Manhattan. Carmen Boullosa interviews the Peruvian singer Susana Baca, who tells us about her start in the music industry and about the current state of Afro-Peruvian music on the world scene, and about her new book, The Bitter Road of Sugarcane: the African in Peru.
