This edition: Is New York Ready to Grow Old? Budget Politics, ICE and AI

Episode Details

Original tape date: June 4, 2026. First aired: June 5, 2026.

New York is taking on ICE, AI "surveillance pricing" and energy hungry data centers just as its population is rapidly aging. In the first half of this week's New York Times Close Up, host Jeff Mays talks with statehouse reporter Grace Ashford about New York's late $269 billion budget, a new clash with ICE over "sensitive locations" like schools and hospitals, and a proposed data center moratorium that could affect your bills and climate alike. In the second half, New York Times reporter Winnie Hu and RiverSpring Living's Wendy Steinberg take us inside Golden Dreams, a Bronx program that turns older adults' bucket list wishes into reality, from tugboat rides and indoor skydiving to a mock college graduation for an 80 year old Holocaust survivor, revealing what it really means to grow old, stay hopeful and try something new in New York City today.
