Original tape date: May 13, 2009.Sheryl welcomes Judith Matloff to the program this week. After 20 years of working as a foreign correspondent, Judith felt the need to return to her roots here in New York.
She's now Contributing Editor of the Columbia Journalism Review and teaches at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. Her roots are now specifically in West Harlem. She and her husband bought a fixer upper on a block they shared with drug dealers and long time residents who deplored what had happened to their community. The story of rehabbing their house is the subject of “Home Girl: Building a Dream House on A Lawless Block.” It's just been re-published by Random House in paperback.
