Original tape date: January 21, 2010.In recent months, the scientific and health care communities have been roiled in controversy over findings by the United States Preventive Services Task Force. That panel recommended that women start having regular breast cancer screening at age 50, not 40, the benchmark that has been advocated for years. The new guidelines made front-page news, and brought outcries from advocacy groups and young women whose breast cancer was diagnosed at an early stage because they had a mammogram. Here to help us sort through the conflicting opinions is Dr. Silvia Formenti, Chair of the Radiation Oncology Department at the NYU Langone Medical Center, and the Sandra and Edward Meyer Professor of Radiation Oncology at the NYU School of Medicine.
