She teaches journalism and creative writing at Baruch College and the City University Graduate Center. She and her husband Shael Shapiro are co-authors of “Illegal Living: 80 Wooster Street and the Evolution of Soho,” Their book chronicles the evolution of the community we know as Soho from a working class residential neighborhood, to a sleazy red-light district, to a manufacturing and commercial area, to a vibrant community of artists’ lofts, to the trendy, upscale commercial area it is today. It’s recently been published by the Jonas Mekas Foundation.
