TweetEpisode Details
Original tape date: April 7, 2021. First aired: April 27, 2021.Gentrification-the process through which poor urban neighborhoods change as wealthier people move in, housing is improved, new business is attracted and current residents are displaced, has been going on as long as there have been poor urban areas.
However, in their book “What the Signs Say: Language, Gentrification and Place making in Brooklyn, John Jay College professors Shonna Trinch and Edward Snajdr, look at gentrification through a new lens.
Documenting how the signs on retail stores evolve over time, they show how the signs not only reflect the gentrification that is taking place, but how they help move the process along.
