Since the 1990s the so-called "broken windows" approach to policing has taken hold in a number of big cities. This strategy says that cracking down on low level offenses in disadvantaged communities -- by keeping those communities more orderly -- prevents more serious crimes from occurring. However a recent study from the CUNY Graduate Center, refutes that theory. Instead of making communities safer, it penalizes residents of color, often with lifelong consequences. Host Sheryl McCarthy discusses these findings with Gaurav Jashnani, one of the study's co-authors with Priscilla Bustamante and Brett G. Stoudt.
