TweetEpisode Details
Original tape date: October 25, 2025. First aired: October 28, 2025.In this episode of One to One, Sheryl McCarthy interviews Dr. Deirdre Conlon, co-author of Immigration Detention, Inc., about how the U.S. immigration detention system has become a massive, profit-driven industry. Conlon explains that private companies like GEO Group and CoreCivic, along with local governments, earn billions from detaining immigrants—often under poor and abusive conditions. She describes how detainees face hunger, inadequate medical care, and exploitative labor for as little as $1 a day, while every service inside detention centers is monetized. Conlon emphasizes that both political parties have supported policies fueling this growth, driven by corporate lobbying and campaign donations. She calls for public action, divestment, and awareness to dismantle the profit motive behind immigration detention.
