Years ago we warehoused the mentally ill in asylums and other institutions, many of which were eventually deemed inhumane. It is estimated that we now have 10 times more mentally ill Americans in our prisons and jails than in our remaining psychiatric institutions. Because of this there is a growing effort by some to reinstitutionalize the mentally ill in large facilities once again. Leah Harris, coordinator of the Recovery Now! campaign, and director of the National Coalition for Mental Health Recovery, gives her take on the best way to care for people who struggle with mental illness.
