Arthur Browne of the New York Daily News has authored a new biography of Samuel Battle, who in 1911, was the first African American police officer hired by the NYPD. While Battle's story is astounding, most are unfamiliar with his accomplishments. Browne shares Battle's trials and triumphs with Bob Herbert.
