There are substantially more Democratic voters than Republican voters in the United States, and on nearly every important issue facing the country – from health care to gun control to climate change, and so on – a solid majority of voters favor the Democratic Party position. And yet Republicans control the White House, both houses of Congress, and most state legislatures and governorships. How can this be? What’s wrong with this grossly contorted political picture?
