This edition: We're With That One Sound: Music and CUNY

Episode Details

Original tape date: May 20, 2014.

First aired: May 25, 2014.

On this month’s show, we look – and listen – to music across the CUNY system. Delving into music here at CUNY takes us into all types of interesting places – we’ll visit the sonics of Japan, Latin America, Louisiana, and the New York subways, just for a start. David Cieri of City College is a music improviser, but also a sound designer for Ken Burns’ film company, Florentine Films. The Latin Jazz Ensemble of Lehman College plays everything from latin rock, to merengue, to Mexican polkas. Then, Abby Anderton of Baruch College tells us how the music of Beethoven was politicized by the Nazi regime, and how the perception of his music changed after the war. A CUNY lecturer and a master of the shakuhachi, the only instrument used in Zen Buddhism, plays us two entrancing songs, and finally, we’ll travel into the subway tunnels to watch the only cajun cellist in the world, Hunter College alum Sean Grissom, play for the young and old.
