Original tape date: September 16, 2022. First aired: October 21, 2022.In the October 2022 episode of “THEATER: All the Moving Parts, Patrick Pacheco hosts a lively and opinionated roundtable discussion of the Fall Theater Season with critics Helen Shaw of “The New Yorker” and Adam Feldman of “Time Out New York”, and Jan Simpson, theater journalist and host of BroadwayRadio podcasts, “Stagecraft” and “All the Drama”.
The panel weighs in on the prospects of some the most highly-touted musicals, such as “Some Like It Hot,” “Almost Famous,” “& Juliet,” “KPOP" and “Kimberly Akimbo." There is a lively discussion of the radical re-imagining of “1776,” with a cast of female and/or non-binary performers playing the founding fathers, as well as whether the use of 1990s pop hits, arguably dismissive of women in their day, can be repurposed as feminist anthems in “& Juliet.” The group especially welcomed the Broadway debut of 91-year-old Adrienne Kennedy in “The Ohio State Murders,” starring Audra McDonald, and of 27-year-old newcomer, Jordan E. Cooper with his play, “Ain’t No Mo'.” Additionally, up for particular praise is “Leopoldstadt,” possibly Tom Stoppard’s swan song. As for Off-Broadway, who knew there had been Nazis on Long Island in the 1930s, as the new play “Camp Siegfried” explores? Also enthusiastically endorsed was “Catch As Catch Can,” Mia Chung’s “cyclone of a play.”
"Theater: All the Moving Parts" is an hour CUNY TV show, featuring in-depth interviews with top theater artists including playwright Theresa Rebeck, book writer/director Michael R. Jackson, dramaturg Ken Cerniglia, intimacy director Claire Warden and lighting designer Natasha Katz. Of Pacheco, Rebeck said, “I felt like I was being interviewed by someone who knows me better than I know myself.” Go to https://bit.ly/36hhnIu to see these and other episodes.
