The joys and challenges of artistic collaboration is the theme of the new episode of “THEATER: All the Moving Parts.” In the first part, playwright David Adjmi and director Daniel Aukin join host Patrick Pacheco to anatomize the brilliant decade-long creation of “Stereophonic,” which triumphed at the 2024 Tony Awards, winning five honors including Best Play. Says Pacheco, “In a Broadway season of outstanding ensemble work, the seven actors of ‘Stereophonic,’ live within a 1970s recording studio as if it were both a sanctuary and a gallows, accepting the “fits, fights, feuds and egos” as a price to pay for greatness. Never before has a Tony win for Best Play belonged to every member of the cast.”

Then the scene shifts to the Civilian Hotel and a discussion with architect and set designer David Rockwell about how he gathered together Broadway designers to create a dazzling celebration of the theater within its rooms. Rockwell’s passion for the stage and his admiration of and respect for his peers and colleagues is evident in every detailed and singular touch that makes the midtown hotel a popular destination. Rockwell says that the key to this fruitful collaboration began with "listening.” The results—including the props and set models in cabinets, the original etchings of theaters on sconces and the murals—lend a kind of beautiful permanence to the most ephemeral of art forms.
