Episode Details

Original tape date: December 6, 2024. First aired: August 29, 2025.

Season 7 of "Theater: All the Moving Parts" comes to a close with a look back at three unforgettable productions. “Liberation”—a play we featured earlier this year—is transferring to Broadway this fall with its full original cast. “Swept Away”—a stirring musical with music by The Avett Brothers—closed prematurely but left a lasting legacy. And just this month, Audra McDonald ended her historic run as Mama Rose in “Gypsy.” Our panel of theater voices reflects on what this groundbreaking revival means for Broadway’s future.

In this episode:

“Liberation”
-Betsy Aidem (Outer Critics Circle Award winner) on Margie: “Margie has that moment of looking around and thinking, is this it? … I haven’t even thought about realizing my infinite potential.”
-Susannah Flood on the stakes: “The gains made by second-wave feminism feel like they hang in the balance… are we losing this?”
-Audrey Corsa on Dora’s breakthrough: “She realizes she is an equal human being and has every right to speak to that.”
-Kristolyn Lloyd on Celeste: “We believe that a woman speaking uninterrupted is a radical act… it’s not just her speaking—it’s every woman who’s ever been silenced.”

“Swept Away”
-A New York Times Critics’ Pick, “Swept Away” tells the story of the 19th-century shipwreck Mignonette through brotherhood, survival, and sacrifice. With music by The Avett Brothers, it played a brief but powerful Broadway run.
-John Gallagher Jr., Stark Sands, Adrian Blake Enscoe, and Wayne Duvall reflect on creating new roles. Gallagher Jr. says: “We got to be part of something that felt almost mythic… a story about survival, about brothers, about being tested. It’s the kind of piece that stays with you, no matter how long it runs.”

“Gypsy”
-Audra McDonald’s historic performance as Mama Rose redefined one of Broadway’s most iconic roles.
-Our panel—Ruthie Fierberg (Executive Editor, Broadway News), Michael Riedel (Singular Sensation), Andrew Chappelle (actor/director), and Matt Koplik (Broadway Breakdown)—explores what McDonald’s casting means for Broadway. Fierberg notes: “It’s not just about Mama Rose—this revival is about the world she’s in, and what it means to put a Black woman at the center of that world.”

-Theater: All the Moving Parts returns with Season 8 on Friday, September 12 at 8:30 PM ET, now airing twice monthly on the second and fourth Fridays on CUNY TV and YouTube. Follow us on Instagram @theatermovingparts for exclusive content and guest announcements.
