In 1985, Heidi Ettinger became the first female set designer to win a Tony Award (for “Big River”), and she went on to win another in 1991 (“The Secret Garden”). She discusses being a pioneer in the male-dominated area of set design, the process of creating a set for the stage, as well as the pressure on designers for the stage to compete with the innovative visuals of film.
